The number of Swiss Abroad rises to 776’300 in 2020 despite the pandemic.
At the end of March 2021, the Federal Statistical Office published the latest figures on the development of Swiss nationals living abroad.
At the end of 2020, almost one in eleven Swiss nationals lived abroad. Compared to 2019, this figure has risen by 0.7%. The increase is particularly noticeable in the group of people over 65 (+2.8%), while the distribution of women (54%) and men remains similar compared to 2019. Overall, however, the increase in the number of Swiss abroad is lower than in previous years (2018: +1.1% and 2019: +1.4%) - the pandemic situation slowed down Swiss mobility in 2020.
An increase in the number of Swiss abroad can be seen for Europe (+1.4%) and Oceania (+0.7%). In Europe, the most popular destinations also continue to show an increase, with France showing an increase of +0.5% and Germany with the most significant increase of +2.5%.
The most popular countries for the Swiss Abroad outside Europe remain the United States (81 300), Canada (40 600), Australia (25 700) and Israel (21 400).
